Barstow/Calico......Peggy Sue's 50's Diner....22nd March

After our very relaxed "holiday" by the sea at Oceanside we are once again on the road this time north on the i-15 to Barstow for a 3 night stopover on our way to Death Valley.........an easy route but could have done without the crazy traffic and the awful road surfaces....as well as a stopover to break the journey we will also stock up our supplies for heading into Death Valley.....
3 miles from our campsite is Calico Ghost Town.....we decide against the $16 entrance fee to see a few old mine shafts and an array of gift shops and instead head back to town to Peggy Sue's 50's Diner and delicious coffee and pie eaten sitting at the original counter......we loved it so much that we returned again this evening for more yummy food.....
There is still a part of the original diner here which over the years has been extended by the present owners as their popularity increased. They had bought the property in the late 1980's as a diner and a place to display their large collection of movie memorabilia.......
Peggy Sue's 50's Diner also has a little water park or as they call it a  Diner-saur Park !!! We spent a very pleasant  half hour watching the many turtles sunning themselves on various rocks and ledges....
One of the turtles and a huge goldfish and I'm sure someone will tell me it's not a goldfish , he he....
This caboose is at the entrance to our campsite....Barstow is railhead town.....it also has a few miles of the Historic Route 66 but sadly most of the old shops and motels, at least a dozen motels, are closed down and boarded up.....
Camp Harris at Barstow/Calico KOA......
Barstow does have one of the few remaining operational Drive-In Movie Theatres......it's closed of course when we visit  as it's during the day.........
There was a gap in the fence just right for Mrs Blogger to take a picture.....
Another area of Barstow that was very run down with many abandoned homesteads......a sign of the times but still sad to see....
Tomorrow, Sunday, we move onto Panamint Springs in Death Valley.....we shall be staying there 3 mights and then moving over to Furnace Creek for 5...I am not sure what the state of play will be with internet so it might have to be a Death Valley catch up when we get to North Las Vegas.....see yha all soon.....
