Cabrillo Light House & Old Town San Diego......8th & 9th March

A beautiful day to visit Cabrillo National Monument, San Diego, part of the National Parks program and where Spanish explorer Juan Cabrillo landed in 1542 and claimed the land for the King of Spain......
The Old Point Loma Lighthouse........building started in 1851 with a Fresnel lens (that's for you Dave !) installed in 1855, the oil lamp being first lit in November of that year..... what seemed like the right location had a serious flaw as fog and low cloud often obscured the beacon, on March 23rd 1891 the lamp was extinguished for the last time !
It's great to be by the sea and this is a good viewing spot to watch for the California Grey Whale migrating north to Alaska... sadly there were no sightings for us today...
We did however see lots of pelicans, cormorants and several seals frolicking in the shallow waters.....

This area has one of the best preserved rocky intertidal areas open to the public .....
A nice surprise (good old Facebook) a pot of ice cream and a candle from Randy and Leslie to mark my birthday.....
Today's visit is to Old Town San Diego....
This was an Aladdin's Cave for me as I love wind chimes and this market had thousands.....
One of the old restored building of the Old Town......

A beautiful day for walking around the old town, browsing the shops  and being entertained with music and dancing in the square......
And for those of you who have had withdrawal symptoms with the lack of water-towers, especially for Jennifer and Alan S here are two we passed on route to San Diego....
Another great couple of days seeing the sights of San Diego Area....tomorrow we must say our fond farewells to Randy and Leslie and thank them for their hospitality, gather up our home-on-wheels and once more take to the road (aptly Willie's Roadhouse played "On The Road Again as we continued our journey) although  the road to Oceanside is a short one but it will be a milestone.....more on that on next blog entry....

  1. Hi Sue & Michael,
Belated happy birthday Sue, hope your day was good. Just looked up Fresnel Lens its amazing what those French physicists were capable of in 1824.(feeling rather smug wait until I test Mr Bloor on that one.
All looks great I was beginning to think that you had turned your attention to light houses, until I scrolled down and saw the good old water tower.
    Enjoy keep on trucking,
    Cheers,
    Ann & Dave
